Three news stories within the past week re-enforces our plea
for people to be aware that health dangers are all about us.
The three headlines read:

Parasite a big problem in Houston'
E. coli linked to to Sizzler hygiene
Des Moines Register, Iowa

A common virus has killed four children in the last two weeks
at the Johnston Children's Habilitation Center.
Parasite a big problem in Houston
Houston Chronicle
A brain-burrowing parasite passed on by people infected with pork
tapeworms is responsible for up to half of seizures in Hispanic
immigrants admitted to Houston hospitals, a tropical disease
researcher said today.

State health officials blame restaurant procedures for summer's
E. coli outbreak at a Milwaukee Sizzler restaurant, saying in a
new report that some employees washed their hands in buckets,
mixed new food with old on the salad bar and processed raw meat
near ready-to-eat foods.
What strikes me most is not that these disease outbreaks occur,
but rather how little attention is given to them. The thinking is,
unless we live in that city or area, why be concerned. It is as
though we have a "it won't happen to me" mentality.
Oh sure, the stories are reported and people do care, at least those
in the area who are directly affected. But the populace at large
remains generally unmoved by these stories.
It is this "other guy" syndrome that reflects how little we regard
our health in general. It is not until we fall victim to illness and
disease that health issues really get our attention. Just human
nature I think.
However, each one of us can no longer afford to live our lives
in this manner. Our world has become much smaller with the
advent of technology. A man suffering from Ebola in Uganda
(80 people have died there from Ebola this past week BTW)
can infect a whole community in Iowa the next day.
Bio-terrorism is very high on the FBI's watch list here in America;
Influenza season is coming on (some 20,000 people are killed
every year by the flu); and almost every community has some
health related issue facing it.
While you cannot stop these events from happening, you can
take active steps to safeguard your own personal health. You
can take an active responsibility in your own well being.
Pathogens like viruses and bacteria can only grab hold in bodies
whose immune system have been compromised. It is a
documented well known fact that a human being in full health can
withstand any viral or bacterial disease onslaught. Think about that!
But many of us do not have full health. Our body's have been
compromised by years of living unhealthful life-styles. Yes,
the environment plays a factor, but wholesome food and
efforts to improve our environment can make the difference
between life and death. Even more remarkable, our body's
have the amazing ability to re-build their defenses given
half a chance to do so.
No one but you can place wholesome, unprocessed food
on your table. No one but you can educate your family about
the necessity of supplementing your diet with nutritional
supplements. No one but you can take active steps to purify
the water you drink or the air you breathe in your home. No one
but you can take the steps necessary to safeguard your family
against a health calamity. Anything less is the equivalent of
playing Russian Roulette, and hoping that "it won't happen
to me."
