Frankincense

Frankincense is considered the holy oil in the Middle East and was
used religiously for thousands of years. It was well known for its
healing powers during the time of Christ. It is now being researched
and used therapeutically in European hospitals. It is anticatarrhal,

TRADITIONAL USES:
Also known as "olibanum" or "Oil from Lebanon" the name frankincense is derived from the Medieval French word for "real incense".
Frankincense is considered the "holy anointing oil" in the Middle East and has been used in religious ceremonies for thousands of years.
Frankincense was well known during the time of Christ for its anointing and healing powers and was one of the gifts given to Christ at his birth.
"Frankincense is "used to treat every conceivable ill known to man" , Frankincense was valued more than gold during ancient
times, and only those with great wealth and abundance possessed it.
Researchers today have discovered that frankincense is high in sesquiterpenes, which helps stimulate the limbic system
of the brain (the center of the emotions) as well as the hypothalmus, pineal and pituitary glands. The hypothalmus is the
master gland of the human body, controlling the release of many hormones including thyroid and growth hormone.
Frankincense is now being researched and used therapeutically in European
hospitals and is being investigated for its ability to improve human growth hormone production.
FOLKLORE:
One of the gifts given to Christ at birth. There are over 52
references to Frankincense in the Bible (considering
that "incense" is translated from the Hebrew/Greek "frankincense" and is
referring to the same oil).
HISTORICAL USES:
Frankincense is a holy oil in the Middle East.

FRANKINCENSE FACTS:
Frankincense trees require an arid climate where moisture is provided by morning mist. Few ideal environments exist in the world for this small prized tree are found in Southern Arabia (Oman and Yemen), India, and Northern Africa (Somalia, Ethiopia, Eritrea and Kenya). Frankincense trees also require a limestone-rich soil and are mostly found growing on rocky hillsides and cliffs, or in the dried riverbeds below.
Frankincense trees grow to about 20ft. in height (8m) with branches often beginning near its base. The Frankincense trees' resin has been treasured for thousands of years for its aromatic and medicinal uses. Frankincense resin begins as a milky-white sticky liquid that flows from the trunk of the tree when it's injured, healing the wound.
Frankincense is also known as olibanum, and its essential oil is often called "Oil of Lebanon." It's commonly recognized western name, frankincense, is said to have originated from the Frankish (French) Knights of the Crusades who treasured it in
large quantities.
Frankincense resin is distilled by steam or CO2 to extract its precious essential oil, which is used extensively in modern aromatherapy. This oil is rejuvenating to the skin, treating acne, bacterial and fungal infections, and to treat wounds and scars. Thus, it is used in cosmetics, soaps, and perfumes. The aim of the study was to investigate the antitumor and/or preventive effect of BC-4, an isomeric compound isolated from the plant
Boswellia carteri Birdw. containing alpha- and beta-boswellic acid acetate in 1:1, MW 498.3. We used the MTT (3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)
2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide) assay to study the growth inhibition activity of BC-4. Tumor cells migration within a three-dimensional
collagen matrix was recorded by time-lapse videomicroscopy and computer-assisted cell tracking. Topoisomerase II was isolated
from mouse melanoma B16F10 cells and its activity was determined by its ability to cut plasmid pBR322 DNA.
The secretion and activity of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) from human fibrosarcoma HT-1080 cells were determined by gelatin
zymography. BC-4 was a cytostatic compound and could induce the differentiation of B16F10 mouse melanoma cells, blocked the
cell population in G1 phase and inhibited topoisomerase II activity. The G1 phase population of B16F10 cells was increased from 57.4 to 87.7
while S phase population was reduced from 33.3 to 5.9after treatment with BC-4 at 25 microM concentration for 48 h. BC-4 also inhibited the
migration activity of B16F10. BC-4 could induce apoptosis of HT-1080 cells, as proved by acridine orange fluorescence staining,
Wright-Giemsa staining, electromicroscopy, DNA fragmentation and flow cytometry. BC-4 inhibited the secretion of MMPs from HT-1080
cells, too. In conclusion, if it turns out that BC-4 is a well tolerated substance, exhibiting no significant toxicity or side effects, being
evaluated currently in China, BC-4 is a good candidate for the prevention of primary tumor, invasion and metastasis.
